Why Van Lifers Should Choose Big Meadows Campground
Big Meadows is the largest campground in Shenandoah National Park and the most strategically positioned—sitting at milepost 51.2 on Skyline Drive, right at the park's midpoint. For van lifers, this means you're within walking distance of the Byrd Visitor Center, Big Meadows Lodge (restaurant and camp store), and some of the park's best trails including Dark Hollow Falls (1.4 miles RT). The campground has 200+ sites, flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, and coin laundry—all in a high-elevation Blue Ridge forest at 3,500 feet. In October, you'll have front-row seats to one of the East Coast's most spectacular fall foliage displays. Shenandoah also has one of the densest black bear populations on the East Coast—bear sightings at Big Meadows meadow are almost guaranteed at dawn. No hookups, but the dump station handles RV needs. If you're driving the East Coast or connecting Skyline Drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway (they connect at the south end), Big Meadows is your basecamp.

Important Notes: - Big Meadows is reservation-only. No walk-up sites for individual camping. Plan ahead. - Black bear country. Use bear boxes. Store all food, coolers, and scented items in vehicles or bear-proof containers overnight. - Skyline Drive has no size restrictions for vehicles (unlike Zion or Glacier). All RV sizes can drive the full length. However, 35 mph speed limit and tight curves—drive carefully. - Marys Rock Tunnel (mile 32.2): Max clearance 12'8". Both lanes same clearance. - No fuel available within the park. Fill up before entering. - Cashless park. Shenandoah does not accept cash for entrance fees.
