Quail Creek State Park

Quail Creek is the winter escape hatch of Utah's state park system. The 600-acre reservoir outside Hurricane — finished in 1985 and fed by water diverted from the Virgin River — sits at just 3,300 feet, so winters stay mild while the rest of the state freezes. Boaters and anglers use it year-round, and the water is some of the warmest you'll find in Utah.

Fishing is the headline act: rainbow trout, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and bullhead catfish, with the reservoir dropping to 120 feet at its deepest. Beyond the water there are petroglyphs scattered around the park, sandy beaches, and red-rock scenery in every direction — St. George's services are minutes away.

The campground itself was recently rebuilt: 26 sites, each with power and water, plus a dump station. For van lifers this is an easy winter base — hookups, warm days, and free BLM dispersed options all over southwest Utah when you want to mix it up. Note that boats need proof of decontamination to launch, and a 70-boat limit keeps the reservoir from crowding.

Note: As of mid-2026, Quail Creek is under Stage 2 fire restrictions — no open fires, charcoal grills, or pellet grills of any kind. Portable gas stoves with a shut-off valve are allowed as long as you clear at least 3 feet of barren ground around them.
