Overview
Diablo Lake is the kind of place that makes people stop their car on the highway just to stare. The water is this impossible turquoise color — glacial flour suspended in the lake, catching light differently depending on the weather. State Route 20 (North Cascades Highway) runs right past it, and the USFS campgrounds along the shore are some of the best car camping in Washington. You're surrounded by 8,000-foot peaks, and the Ross Lake backcountry starts just across the water. The catch? The highway is closed from roughly November through April due to avalanche risk. Plan around that.
