The Black Hills National Forest around Custer is one of those rare places where you can camp for free, surrounded by granite peaks and ponderosa pines, less than 30 minutes from Mount Rushmore. The dispersed camping along Forest Roads 135 and 221 is well-established — clear fire rings, level pads, and enough tree cover to block wind. This is a good base camp for the entire Black Hills region: Needles Highway, Wildlife Loop, Sylvan Lake, and the Crazy Horse Memorial are all within 20 minutes. The town of Custer (population 2,000) has a grocery store, a few restaurants, and a laundromat. It's practical and unpretentious.
